Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineer Summer Placement

Location
Aberdeen, Hill of Rubislaw UK AB10 1XE

Date Posted
8 February 2024

Closing Date
8 March 2024

Department: Asset Life Optimisation

Hourly Rate: Competitive

The Role – EC&I Engineer Summer Placement

This placement will be split between the Bruce asset’s Electrical Engineer, and Instrument & Control Engineer. The placement focus will be largely dealing with obsolescence issues associated with ageing plant infrastructure – this topic is a common one across the North Sea and is likely to be a large part of any future engineering career in the industry. In addition to this, the placement will present the opportunity to reach out to wider areas of the business to make better use of the terabytes of plant data stored in historians and largely underutilised. The placement will also provide exposure to issues associated with process safety and environmental performance which are omnipresent across the industry.

Primary Scopes of Work:

  1. Power Management System Upgrade
The Brush Prismic power management system (PMS) on Bruce Platform is currently obsolete and no longer supported by OEM. An obsolescence forward plan must be created to mitigate against an unrecoverable failure of a critical component within the PMS system.

  2. PLC Upgrade
By end of Q2 24 it is anticipated that an Electrical, Control & Instrumentation obsolescense strategy will have been developed. This is likely to identify some significant obsolescence issues around programmable logic controllers used in the HVAC system
Secondary Scopes of Work:
  1. Use of Data
Live data from the main process control system is recorded in a ‘PI historian’ system. This allows historical process data to be trended and interrogated by onshore users in a secure manner. A similar system also documents time stamped alarm and event information. Recently these data sources have been connected to cloud based Microsoft Power Automate software. The connection to power automate allows the easy creation of scripts which can take action based upon plant condition, a recent example includes email alerts to relevant engineers when a major piece of plant equipment trips, and automatic logging of gas turbine start and stops. The connection to power automate is very recent and it’s potential is largely underutilised.

  2. Master Alarm Data Validation
Alarm and trip set points are configured within the main automated process control system. The main process control system is not remotely accessible. A record of these alarm and trip settings resides in an onshore accessible location, in our engineering data management system (PIM360). Over time alarm set points may be modified, and on occasion the requirement to update the onshore data management system can be missed. When discrepancies do occur, this can then create confusion during routine maintenance where a transmitter or other device is being tested to across its range.

Other Work Experience

  1. Working with the Electrical Engineer, take part in factory acceptance testing of replacement fused vaacum contactors.
  2. Attend visit to control system OEM, Yokogawa in Westhill. This will allow the opportunity to see the ‘TAD’ test and development system, and an opportunity to see a simulated version of the plant control system.
  3. Take part in process safety awareness training

What we are looking for in potential candidates:

  • Studying towards an Electrical, Electronic or Instrumentation Engineering Degree
